Macadamia Nuts and Health
Macadamias, of course, contain no cholesterol (CHO). Recent clinical research has shown that consuming 50 – 100 gms of macadamia nuts per day can actually decrease your blood cholesterol by as much as 7 – 9% in just 4 weeks! Our own customer base at MacNuts has demonstrated these same beneficial effects, so that we have customers who now regularly eat our macadamias (natural or plain roasted) to keep their cholesterol at healthy levels.
Research has also shown that by consuming macadamias 5 or more times per week, you can reduce your risk of coronary heart disease by up to 53%.
Macadamia oil contains 84% monounsaturates: “the Good Oil” (high density lipoproteins) this is the highest percentage of any nut oil, and higher even than canola or olive oils.
Macadamias contain vitamins E, A1, B1, B2, B5, B6, Niacin and dietary fibre.
Macadamias contain Phytochemicals: anti-oxidants including polyphenols, amino acids, selenium and flavanols.
Dietary trials have demonstrated that regular consumption of macadamias can effect a significant reduction in total blood serum cholesterol, a reduction in total blood triglycerides, and a reduction of the undesirable low density cholesterol with little or no change in the desirable high density cholesterol. They can also lower blood pressure in hypertensive people.
Macadamia oil is higher in monounsaturates than Extra Virgin olive oil and it has a much higher smoke point than olive oil at around 210 degrees C, so it is an excellent healthy cooking oil as well as being a delicious ingredient in salad dressings.
